Powerless to Powerful

Powerless to Powerful: Leadership for Change

Powerless to Powerful (P2P) is an approach to program and system implementation which comes from the lived experience of school transformation. The underlying principles are applicable to any school, and many of the components are generalizable as well. People often periodically revisit the work, and always find something new or read the content in a new way.

The P2P leadership framework is based on the books Powerless to Powerful: Leadership for School Change and Transforming Schools Through Systems Change which compiled common themes and leadership strategies from a study of low performing schools in the state of Washington who made rapid transformational changes. Chuck Salina, one of the authors, was the turnaround principal at Sunnyside High School. Chuck lived the P2P framework, and through his leadership, Sunnyside High School made rapid transformational changes, with the graduation rate increasing from 50% to over 85% in just one year.

No matter where you are on your P2P journey, ESD 123 can support you. Let us help you become the leader you know you can be.

What We Have to Offer:

  • To gain a deeper understanding of the factors of the P2P Conceptual Framework:
    • Book Study: Designed for busy leaders who want to learn about the P2P in a group setting, the book study consists of 10 one-hour sessions with no outside reading time required. Registration for the 2023 book study has closed.
  • To gain the skills to create a culture for learning:
    • Principal Leadership Network: Principals who have foundational understanding of P2P can participate in this network to share their 45 day action plans, leadership challenges, and successes.
  • To apply the conceptual framework and new leadership behaviors to your context and setting:
    • District Leadership Consortium: District leadership and the ESD gather alongside Chuck Salina and Suzann Girtz to develop awareness and the related behaviors to support building level leadership capacity, including developing a culture that supports adult and student learning through the implementation of the Conceptual and Action Framework.
