As we wrap-up the 2020-2021 school year, preschool classrooms in ESD 123’s Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) are celebrating student creativity and the ingenuity of our teachers and local partners with the ECEAP Virtual Art Show. The region’s first ever ECEAP art show features artwork from ECEAP preschool classrooms at 15 sites across the region, funded by Creative Start Site and Regional Art Grants from the Washington State Art Commission.

ECEAP partnered with local artists from various disciplines to incorporate art into academic and social emotional learning. Artists recorded instructional videos to share first with families at home during remote learning and then in classrooms, which teachers incorporated into opportunities for play-based learning experiences throughout the year. Students counted music beats, studied nature by recreating insects and landscapes in paper and clay, learned shapes and colors by designing quilt squares and glass sun-catchers, and improved social emotional skills through collaborative work.

“When you walk into an ECEAP classroom, you’re not just seeing worksheets. There’s a different way to get to the learning,” says ECEAP Administrator Lisa Brouwer-Thompson.

This work is now on display in the ECEAP Virtual Art Show, showcasing the preschoolers and their artwork.
