VEBA

1% of your monthly paycheck (pre-tax) goes into a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) account for your use. The Voluntary Employees Beneficiary Association (VEBA) is a type of group health plan you can use to reimburse out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Eligible employees participate in a retirement plan through the State of Washington's Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Both the ESD and the employee contribute monthly to the retirement plan. The percentage of contribution depends upon the plan selected.

Retirement Academy

Planning for retirement is an important thing we may neglect because we don’t know where to begin. The Retirement Academy through PlanMember is an easy way to improve your financial literacy and learn about personal finance, saving, investing and other important financial topics. The three online courses take about 20 minutes each and can provide you with a road-map to jump-start your retirement future. Sign up at esd123.retacademy.com to get started!

Deferred Compensation Plan

Employees may participate in the state’s Deferred Compensation plan (DCP). Unlike with a traditional savings account, contributions to a DCP savings program are tax-deferred. This means a DCP lowers your taxable income while you’re working and delays payments of income taxes on your investments until they’re withdrawn. Learn more about DCPs with this DRS video.

Available through the Department of Retirement Services or PlanMember.

  • Contact DRS: call 360.664.7000 or 800.547.6657
  • Contact PlanMember: Lisa McCullough, PlanMember Financial Advisor, at [email protected] or 509.663.7526

Traditional or Roth 403(b) Tax-Sheltered Annuity (TSA)

Roth 403(b) contributions are made on an after-tax basis and are ideal for employees expecting to be in a higher tax bracket in retirement. Whereas with a traditional 403(b) account, a participant’s gross salary is reduced by the amount of the pre-tax contributions and earnings are taxed upon withdrawal, contributions to a Roth account are subject to taxes before they go into the plan and participants will not pay taxes on contributions and earnings when they make a qualified withdrawal.

Available through DRS or PlanMember.
