This is the image for the news article titled Columbia Elementary Recognized with SEWASA AwardEach year, ESD 123 and the school districts across our region recognize a community service recipient at the annual Southeast Washington Association of School Administrators (SEWASA) Banquet. The 2022 banquet was held on Wednesday, June 1st at Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland.

ESD 123 Superintendent, Mr. Darcy Weisner, proudly presented the agency’s 2022 Community Service award to Columbia Elementary School Principal, Ian Yale, and his staff. The community service award is designed to recognize outstanding leadership and pay tribute to exemplary service, equity, and excellence in student learning. What Columbia Burbank Elementary staff did to earn this award during the 2021-22 school year is truly inspiring.

Thanks to the joint efforts of Walla Walla County social worker, Megan Millar with the Division of Children and Family Services, and Columbia Elementary staff, one young student’s life was changed for the better. A local student who had not been in a school or program previously, was enrolled in Columbia School District in February 2022. When Ms. Millar contacted the Columbia Elementary secretary to inform her that the student was at risk of being moved out of the area due to a lack of available foster homes, the entire staff jumped into action. Juline Tuck, the school secretary, knew that the whole staff had truly wrapped around this child and that he had been making significant progress in school. Ms. Tuck knew the staff would want to help.

Ms. Millar explained that school staff would be eligible for consideration as foster placements, as they are considered “Suitable Placements.” Within an hour, Ms. Millar and DCFS had received the paperwork for 6 applicants, all willing to help this student.

At ESD 123, our mission statement says, “One team, helping all students realize their dreams and aspirations,” and we know that team extends far beyond our own staff. We are deeply grateful to be a part of this bigger team that supports all students. The Columbia Elementary staff truly exemplified this mission in their actions. We are honored to recognize Mr. Yale and the entire Columbia school staff for making a difference in students’ lives and helping a child in need.
