I don’t think any one of us could have predicted how the last few months of school would turn out for our children. Parenting is a tough job on the best of days, but, for many, COVID-19 has provided additional emotional and mental stress. Despite this, we have seen you displaying tremendous strength during this time. You have taken on the role of teaching your children at home. You have used resources to create learning opportunities, but most importantly you have involved your children in learning through day-to-day life activities.

We applaud you for being your child’s lifelong teacher and wish you the very best in your future. If we were in person, we would hug you and give you a standing ovation!

Benjamin Franklin said: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn”

Keep involving your children in your daily activities, and they will grow in ways you can only imagine.

We invite you and your family to take some time to create a Summer Idea Board:

  • Use a large poster board (or large piece of paper) and draw a line down the middle of it
  • Have each family member share 2-3 summer fun ideas.  Write every idea (even silly ones!) on sticky notes (or pieces of paper with tape) and place them on the left side of the poster.  Get creative and decorate it together!
  • When your family does one of the ideas, move it to the right side of the poster.  Then you can look back on what you have done and be thankful for it.
  • Have fun and enjoy your summer together!

Some suggestions for your Summer Idea Board:

  • Take a walk outside and look for animals.  Look closely for small insects (worms) or count how many cats and dogs you see.
  •  Make music together.  Create a shaker; put dried beans between two plates and staple the plates together.
  • Have a picnic at a park or in the backyard.
  • Make a fort (use boxes, blankets or pillows) inside or outside.
  • Visit a Farmer’s Market.  Find new foods and select one to bring home to try.

  • Salga a caminar y busque animales.

This fun, food-themed day is about more than just cheese and crackers. Cooking together connects math with literacy skills, science, and more.

When children build together they explore math and science concepts and develop their social and early literacy skills. Children can use any building material—from a fort of branches on the playground to a block city in the classroom, or a hideaway made from couch pillows at home.

Think, problem solve, create! Children develop creativity, social skills and fine motor skills with open-ended art projects where they can make choices, use their imaginations, and create with their hands.
