Prevention and Intervention Services

Prevention Center places Prevention/Intervention (P/I) Specialists in schools to implement comprehensive student assistance programs that address problems associated with substance use. P/I Specialists provide early alcohol and other drug prevention and intervention services to students and their families, assist in referrals to treatment providers, and strengthen the transition back to school for students who have had problems with alcohol and other drug abuse. These services are funded by blending funds from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, U. S. Department of Education Safe & Drug Free Schools, Department of Health, and other school district resources to provide service to students in grades K-12 with primary emphasis on students at the secondary level.

P/I Specialists are counseling professionals with specialized training in alcohol, drug and violence prevention. Services provided are:

Services

  • Identification of students who are at risk of initiating substance use, coping with the substance use of significant others, and suspected of substance use;
     
  • Provide counseling, peer support groups, social skills training, classroom education on substance abuse and violence prevention;
     
  • Interventions designed to address the needs of each student;
     
  • Provide resource and referral to community service agencies to provide assessment, treatment and aftercare for students who are suspected of needing such services;
     
  • Prevention club activities that engage students in implementing substance abuse and violence prevention strategies on campus
     
  • Provide substance abuse awareness training to students, staff and parents;
     
  • Consultations with students, parents and teachers to enhance students’ academic success

Additional Prevention/Intervention Specialist time is available as a fee for service.
