Tobacco Prevention & Cessation
 

Welcome to ESD 123 Prevention Services Tobacco Prevention and Cessation resource page! 

Tobacco Prevention & Intervention Services are provided to 23 school districts within the ESD 123 region.  This program is funded through tobacco settlement dollars allocated by the Washington State Legislature and administered by Washington State Department of Health. Services and resources are aligned closely with the Substance Abuse Prevention and Intervention Specialist services in order to provide tobacco prevention and early intervention to students. The program targets youth in grades 5 through 9 and partners with community coalitions and state resources for successful tobacco prevention and intervention services.


Working With Schools
The Tobacco Prevention and Cessation coordinator works to provide technical assistance to the Prevention/Intervention Specialists, Administrators, Teachers and School Staff in the ESD 123 region.  This includes promoting evidence-based, effective prevention curriclums for the classroom, providing support and training for implementation of the bi-annual
Washington State Healthy Youth Survey, and support for professional development opportunities for health & fitness teachers through the Office of the Superintendant of Public Instruction (OSPI).

Resources may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Prevention/Intervention Specialist Support Services;
  • Professional development trainings for teachers, counselors and Prevention/Intervention Specialists in best practices tobacco prevention curriculums and related topics;
  • Provides early intervention, diversion and tobacco cessation services in schools;
  • Works closely with school districts and community partners to develop and/or enhance a “No Tobacco” policy that supports tobacco prevention efforts;
  • Technical assistance in developing comprehensive tobacco prevention plans;
  • Create and/or expand youth empowerment programs;
  • Provide family skill building programs that foster prevention messages
     

Linking to Community Resources
The ESD 123 region covers
Benton, Franklin, Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield,Asotin and a portion of Adams county.  The ESD 123 Tobacco Prevention Coordinator collaborates with the Tobacco Prevention individuals within each of these counties to bring programs such as the following; Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU), which is an American Lung Associan program involving Peer Education for teens, SpeakOut, which is an American Cancer Society program involving the development of leadership roles in tobacco prevention efforts at a community level, and more.
