ESD 123 is joining with other Washington ESDs in an innovative effort to recruit and retain qualified Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs) in our educational systems.
The Special Educator Employment Konsortium, or SEEK, is working to satisfy three environmental needs-- (1) Finding qualified candidates for specialized student service shortage-area openings in the short-term; (2) Providing long-term pathways for qualified candidates to fill positions in shortage-area fields; and (3) Lowering the attrition rate for special education personnel.
The SLP Pathways Program is a major SEEK initiative. This program provides for qualified SLP candidates to enter an accredited, ASHA-approved master's degree program and earn their degrees online while employed full-time in schools. A partnership agreement between NOVA Southeastern University (NSEU), the Oregon Department of Education, and SEEK makes this 3-year master's degree program designed for working professionals available.
The third cohort of this program will begin its coursework in February 2011. There are 10-15 openings for SEEK sponsored students, and applications are being accepted through August 2010. Benefits to program participants include tuition discounts, education assistance awards and the flexibility to work full-time while earning a master's degree.
