This is the image for the news article titled Reaching Early Learners Through ArtThe Pasco Early Learning Center will innovate the way art is used to support preschoolers’ academic and social emotional learning with the award of the Creative Start Site Grant for the 2020-21 school year. ESD 123’s Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) is one of eight programs awarded this grant from the Washington State Arts Commission (ArtsWA), which will be used to support a comprehensive early learning arts program at the Early Learning Center.

In addition to partnering with ESD 123 to provide ECEAP services, the Early Learning Center in Pasco serves special education and general education preschool students in one inclusive building. ECEAP Administrator Lisa Brouwer-Thompson says the grant will further that mission of inclusivity by providing a site-wide art program, as well as growing the center and its staff as regional leaders in culturally responsive arts integration. An implementation plan determining how the arts program will look in the upcoming school year will be submitted by the end of June 2020.

“The idea of therapeutic arts being integrated into our classrooms has been a dream for me personally,” says Ms. Brouwer-Thompson. “I believe that art therapy is one way we will be able to reach our children who are most heavily impacted by trauma in their lives.”

Ms. Brouwer-Thompson and her team at the Early Learning Center will connect the culture of the community and student needs with training from experts from ArtsWA to develop a program that uses art to bridge opportunity gaps and foster creativity in our youngest students.
