Cohort 16 is the ninth 21st Century grant awarded to ESD 123 by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, the five-year grant will serve Highlands Middle School and Fuerza Elementary School in Kennewick, along with the FirstFruits Community in Prescott.

Since 2006, ESD 123 has partnered with schools and living communities to bring both before- and after-school programming, home visitor services, tutoring, and many other critical resources to the doorsteps of students and families across the region. The 21st Century program complements and supports limited services currently available to the families served. Program administrators are passionate about growing sustainable programming in the communities served.

“No matter where our site is located, our consistent focus is on building community,” says ESD 21st Century Program Director Margarita Alaman. “We hope that by imbedding ourselves into the community that is already in place, we can foster new programs, build new relationships, provide effective resources, and learn from the families.”

The families served by Highlands, Fuerza, and FirstFruits share common barriers such as working long hours, struggling to get time off work, language barriers, and transportation. The 21st Century program of ESD 123 looks forward to continued success in partnering alongside and empowering students and families so that they can continue to have resilience and know they have supports within a trusted community.
