School Nursing
The school nurse has a central management role in the implementation
of the school health services program for all children and youth in
the school. Ideally, the school nurse collaborates with primary care
physicians, specialists, and local public health and social service
agencies to ensure a full spectrum of effective and quality services
that sustain children, youth, and their families. (PEDIATRICS Vol.
108 No. 5 November 2001)
ESD 123 provides Registered Nurses to assist districts address their student

School Nurse Corps
The School Nurse Corps Grant was appropriated by the Washington State Legislature to provide nursing services to districts with little or no nursing services during the 1998-1999 school year. It is primarily focused on class 2 and rural school districts with less than 2,000 students. In our region since the first year (1999-2000) this funding has provided school nurses in 17 of our 23 school districts and over 23,623 hours of direct nursing service.
Other priorities of the Nurse Corps include Oral Medication Administration Training for school personnel that administer medication to students, development of emergency and individual healthcare plans (ECPs & IHPs), and assistance with screening programs.
-
School Nurse Co-op
The School Nurse Co-op provides professional school nursing services to participating school districts. It allows districts to receive nursing services as needs are identified while ESD 123 hires, trains and supervises the nurses. This allows districts to provide nursing services that the School Nurse Corps cannot offer due to focus or funding.
-
Supervision of school RN staff
This service provides school districts with a certificated school nurse to train, mentor, coach and/or supervise their nurse. Registered nursing practice cannot be evaluated by a person not holding a nursing license. Provide the district with an assessment of their situation and suggest alternatives in reaching goals the district sets. Support for nurses working with new or difficult situations.
