School Health Services

Mission

To enhance student success by reducing health barriers that interfere with learning.  We work in compliance with federal and state laws, and practice within professional standards defined by national school nurse and school health organizations.

School nurses assist schools, communities and parents in the following in unique and dynamic ways.

Schools

  • Creating safe systems and support for students with serious, complex health conditions
  • Identifying health*-related barriers to learning (including attendance and student engagement)
  • Preventing communicable diseases
  • Recommending accommodations for student learning
  • Supporting and educating school staff
  • Recommending safe & healthy school environments
  • Participating in the development of health-related district policies
  • Developing systems for student health records and information

Communities

  • Providing current and accurate health information
  • Linking community health resources
  • Interpreting community health issues
  • Supporting families and children

Parent Education

  • Providing crisis planning and intervention
  • Developing and implementing plans for chronic health conditions
  • Educating and counseling individual students with health concerns

*Health is defined as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (Preamble to the Constitution of the World Health Organization as adopted by the International Health Conference, New York, 19 June - 22 July 1946; signed on 22 July 1946 by the representatives of 61 States (Official Records of the World Health Organization, no. 2, p. 100) and entered into force on 7 April 1948. The definition has not been amended since 1948)."

School nurses use a holistic assessment to help individual students, their families and school staff find areas of strengths and concerns to develop effective achievable plans that improve student success.
