Tobacco Prevention
and Intervention Services
Tobacco Prevention and Intervention Services are provided to 23
school districts within the ESD 123 region through tobacco settlement
dollars allocated by the Washington State Legislature and administered
by Washington State Department of Health. Services and resources
are aligned closely with the Substance Abuse Prevention and Intervention
Specialist services in order to provide tobacco prevention and early
intervention to students.
The program targets youth in grades 5 through 9 and partners with
community coalitions and state resources for successful tobacco prevention
and intervention services.
ESD 123 has worked with all 23 school districts in developing tobacco
prevention and intervention implementation plans that incorporate
best practices and guidelines for school-based tobacco prevention
and intervention. Resources may include:
- Training teachers, counselors and Prevention/Intervention
Specialists in tobacco prevention and cessation;
- Provides early intervention, diversion and tobacco cessation
services;
- Works closely with school districts and community partners
to develop and/or enhance a “No Tobacco” policy that
supports tobacco prevention efforts;
- Prevention/Intervention Specialist Services;
- Technical assistance in developing comprehensive tobacco
plans;
- Create and/or expand youth empowerment programs;
- Provide family skill building programs that foster prevention
messages
ESD 123 community Tobacco Prevention partners are Tobacco Free Benton & Franklin
Counties, Asotin County Health Department, Garfield County Health
Department, Walla Walla Health Department, Columbia County Public
Health, and Adams County Health Department.
