Just Suppose...
Each spring our agency brings a speaker for our local boards of directors to enjoy and to inspire pondering. This year Dr. Fred Raab from the LIGO laboratory, west of our offices about 20 miles, provided the touch. LIGO is a state of the art laboratory designed to provide insights into our universe. Inspired by Einstein’s views of gravitational waves, the laboratory is immense in size and possibilities.
Suppose that our region could have a teaching laboratory attached to not merely a world class, but indeed a universe class working laboratory that churns out new discoveries. Suppose that at such a place, teachers could investigate and conduct inquiry into some of the most challenging scientific lessons in preparation for their teaching. Suppose as well, that those who need to “pump up” certain scientific skills could do so at such a place in ways that galvanize their confidence. Suppose that this place could fuse science and math concepts in ways that reinforcement is not only possible but predictable.
Such a place exists in Louisiana. The wonderful news that Dr. Raab shared with our boards of directors is that consideration for such a place right here in our region has moved to the planning phase. Imagine an 8,000 square foot laboratory for such experiences. Just suppose that such a place would be available to students as well.
Our role here at ESD 123 is to provide a connecting hub for LIGO and regional school districts. Three school leaders in our region have joined our efforts to investigate the possibilities for such an experience. Saundra Hill of Pasco, Carol Clarke of Waitsburg and Jean Lane of Richland will be advising Dr. Raab and his staff on this enterprise. Stay tune for future developments.
